Supplements Improve Digestion and Overall Health
Your digestive system needs enough vitamins to function properly. If you take the proper supplements to improve digestion, it can alleviate constipation, bloating, and improve your glucose tolerance. Also, if you suffer from heartburn, you may benefit from taking digestive enzyme supplements. Some of these digestive health supplements are good at removing toxins from the body.
There are more than 60,000 different compounds produced in big quantities for agricultural and industrial use in the United States. None of them require safety testing! That is an alarming amount considering that these compounds are in our environment and sometimes end up in our food. Considering that heavy metals seem to be so prevalent in our society, we may need to take heavy metal detox supplements.
Supplements are not new to Americans. In fact, they have been taking multivitamins and minerals since the 1940s when they were first produced. These supplements are still very popular accounting for nearly 1/6 of all dietary supplements and 40% of all sales of vitamin and mineral supplements. An estimated 1/3 of Americans take these supplements.
Those that take supplements regularly may include:
Women who take hormone balance supplements to alleviate occasional hot flashes
Women will take breast health supplements because they are worried about breast disease
Men who are concerned with prostate cellular health take prostate health supplements
Men, women, and children consume needed supplements to improve digestion
Even exclusively or partially breastfed babies should receive 500 IU per day of Vitamin D. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends they start this supplementation shortly after they are born until they are weaned. Because adolescents are growing so fast, they are being advised to take 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day as recommended by the Institute of Medicine. People over the age of 50 get most of their vitamin B12 from synthetic sources, either dietary supplements or from fortified foods. These vitamins help give them the energy they need to function every day.
According to the Institute of Medicine, adults should eat a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight daily. For a 150-pound adult, that means they should eat 58 gms of protein. Approximately 10% of U.S. adults say they largely follow a vegetarian-inclined diet. It is imperative that they take supplements to improve digestion and to stay healthy.
