Because adolescents are growing so fast, they are being advised to take 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day as recommended by the Institute of Medicine. People over the age of 50 get most of their vitamin B12 from synthetic sources, either dietary supplements or from fortified foods. These vitamins help give them the energy they need to function every day.

According to the Institute of Medicine, adults should eat a minimum of 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight daily. For a 150-pound adult, that means they should eat 58 gms of protein. Approximately 10% of U.S. adults say they largely follow a vegetarian-inclined diet.
