What Causes Fibroids?

Treatments for uterine fibroids

Doctors don’t know how uterine fibroids develop, but they have found that some certain women are more likely to show signs and symptoms of fibroids. Here are just a few of the factors that may make a patient more likely to experience symptoms of fibroid cysts.

Obesity.

Women who are obese have a higher risk of developing fibroids. Very obese women, in fact, are two or three times more likely to get fibroids, in fact. This risk is further increased if the women eats a lot of red meat.

Ethnicity.

Unfortunately, studies have shown that African-American are far more likely to develop fibroids than Caucasian women are. In fact, fibroids are two to three times more common amongst women of African-Caribbean descent, and also tend to be larger and more numerous in these patients.

Family History.

Like most medical problems, family history is a strong indicator of whether or not a woman will have fibroids. If a patient’s mother, sister, cousin, aunt, or grandmother had fibroids, her risk of developing these benign tumors increases about three times.

Age.

Age is perhaps the biggest risk factor, as they’re far, far, far more common amongst women in their 30s and their 40s. That being said, fibroids shrink after menopause sets in, so age can also be a good thing when dealing with fibroids.

If you have any of these risk factors, rest at easy. There are plenty of uterine fibroids treatment options. There are medicinal fibroid treatments that can help ease pain and even shrink the size of the fiborids. There are non-invasive uterine fibroid treatments, which can quickly and effectively remove the problematic tumors. Lastly, there are also surgical fibroid treatments, which can put an end to the problem once and for all. These surgical fibroid treatments, though, are a last resort for when the other options don’t work, so don’t worry if you’re afraid of surgery.
