Incontinence and Other Health Concerns for Older Adults

Since Americans are living longer, the percentage of older adults is steadily increasing. By 2030, it is estimated that 20% of the United States’ population will consist of senior citizens and the elderly.

Since a recent survey with retirees indicated that good health was central to a happy retirement for 81% of the participants, more older Americans appear to be focused on their health concerns. In this way, they will be able to remain independent and have an active, happy life.

Chronic Health Conditions

Currently, 2 out of every 3 older adults experiences multiple chronic conditions. These include arthritis, asthma, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure, or hypertension. Other individuals may experience painful bladder syndrome and interstitial cystitis, which is also referred to as PBS.

The Use of Catheters

When patients are hospitalized, approximately 15% to 25% will require urinary catheters while in the hospital. In many instances, catheterization is needed prior to, during, and following surgical procedures.

When someone has PBS, oral medications and bladder instillations may used to treat this syndrome. When a bladder instillation is indicated, a catheter will be inserted into the bladder in order to administer medication.

The Incidence of Incontinence

Urinary incontinence tends to increase as adults become older. For adults between the ages of 65 to 69, there is a 14% increase in the experience of incontinence. Adults that are 85 and older tend to experience a 45% increase of incontinence throughout their lives.

Incontinence Products

Some individuals that experience incontinence may need to use leak proof diapers for adults while they sleep. In this case, they may also want to use a washable mattress protector and washable bed pads for incontinence.

Disposable mattress pads are also a welcome option. When disposable mattress pads are used, it can greatly reduce the amount of laundry that needs to be washed and dried.

Other individuals may require leak proof diapers throughout the day. When these are used, adults that experience incontinence will feel comfortable leaving the house. This assists with their being able to continue a more active and independent life.
